Stephanie Bertin, Librarian
Folsom Public Library 

As one who enjoys helping kids develop a love of libraries and reading, Stephanie has the ideal job.  She has responsibility for youth services at the Georgia Murray Library Building.  Her daily duties include selecting materials for kids and teens, planning programs and events, presenting story times, working with the Teen Library Council and creating promotional materials for her programs.  Stephanie says, “I love working with kids because they are so excited and curious.”  A co-worker says Stephanie is a “terrifically talented librarian who provides exceptional customer service and is lots of fun to work with!”


Ruth Woods, Motorcycle Officer
Police Department 

Ruth is a strong believer in positive reinforcement.  That’s why she uses her own funds to buy frozen yogurt gift certificates to reward kids who wear helmets and obey bicycle safety rules.  “A properly worn helmet can be the difference between a few scrapes and bruises and a critical head injury,” she says.  Ruth also wants kids to view police officers in a positive light.  “We may look scary to them with our big bulky uniforms.  I want them to respect us and see us as the kind people we really are.”  Ruth was a Folsom Reserve Officer from 1985 to 1990, and then returned as a full-time sworn officer in 2001.  As a motorcycle officer, she investigates traffic collisions, enforces traffic laws and assists patrol officers.


Marie McKeeth, Senior Environmental Specialist
Ut
ilities Department

A 14-year City employee, Marie maintains the solid waste division’s data systems to evaluate operations and meet state reporting requirements. She also has primary responsibility for routing the City’s waste collection vehicles, and conducts educational workshops to help residents learn about composting.  Marie takes pride in her record of strong customer service saying, “Good customer service starts with a clear understanding of my customer’s needs.”  Her supervisor says Marie is very diligent and thorough and promotes a can do attitude.  


Jude Lim, Maintenance Worker
Utilities Department

Jude has responsibility for maintaining the grounds and landscape at the City’s Water Treatment Plant, pumping stations and reservoirs.  “I’ve seen her work in 102 degree heat and during cold rain storms.  No matter what the weather, she does a great job,” says her supervisor.  Jude says she enjoys the independence her job provides, allowing her to determine what needs to be done.  “I expect a lot from myself. As a long-time gardener, this type of work comes naturally to me.”

Betty Marchbanks, Engineering Technician
Public Works Department 

Betty is well known around City Hall for her quick response and thoroughness when handling her diverse duties.  As a co-worker commented, “Betty seems to be everywhere, helping everyone.”  Betty responds to residents who have concerns about traffic and road closures.  She manages the City’s current ADA ramp replacement program.  And, she collects and maintains roadway and storm drain data for future review and analysis.  “Customer service is the key element in any successful service or business,” she says.  “Listening helps the individual know I understand and will provide them with whatever is needed.”


Taya Jackson, Disbursement Technician
Finance Department
 

Taya’s supervisor describes her as the department cheerleader who always has a smile, positive outlook and a great attitude when working with vendors and other employees.  Taya worked as a temporary employee before she was added to the City’s permanent staff almost three years ago. She handles accounts payable functions, ensuring timely payment of invoices, resolving issues with vendors and keeping accounts current.  “There is a sense of personal reward in knowing that I have helped to make someone’s life a little easier and day a little brighter,” she says.


Steve Banks, Senior Planner
Community Development Department 

Steve has responsibility for analyzing and reviewing plans for notable projects such as Palladio, Kaiser, Cal-ISO headquarters and the Historic Railroad Plaza to ensure compliance with standards and regulations. He takes pride in providing service in a thoughtful and proactive manner, collaborating to meet the customer’s needs, solving problems and implementing effective solutions.  “Steve embodies the concept of great customer service,” says his supervisor.  “He maintains firm schedules, prepares quality reporters and presentations, and best of all, he sustains a positive outlook.”


Jeff Morrow, Recreation Supervisor
Parks & Recreation Department
 

Jeff, who joined the City’s staff in 2000, supervises programs at all the City’s athletic facilities, including the popular Folsom Sports Complex.  He says good customer service means being a good communicator who listens to customers while presenting a positive and professional demeanor. His co-workers consider him a great team player who is always ready to lend a hand.  Jeff’s supervisor notes that Jeff has a passion for recreation, a strong sense of fair play and a business background that all contribute to his success.

Kristina Eicher, Utilities Technician
Utilities Department, Wastewater Division 

When residents have wastewater problems, Kristina is often the one who takes their calls.  She supports the wastewater crews so they can keep the sewer lines operating properly.  Using her strong computer skills, she troubleshoots and plans manhole inspections, and creates work order for repairs and for flushing the lines.  “Good customer service means that when residents hang up the phone, they know we have made every effort to solve their problem quickly and efficiently.”  Her supervisor says Kristina is a wonderful asset who has proven her worth when it comes to customer service.


Courtney Ballance, Crime & Intelligence Analyst
Police Department 

“Courtney is very good at forecasting and finding crime patterns and trends that help the Police Department assign resources,” says a supervisor.  “She’s a hard worker and her analysis is right on target.”  Courtney collects and analyzes crime data and provides statistics to help the Criminal Investigations Bureau deploy and allocate resources.  She also responds to queries from the public about crime trend data. “Good customer service means being available, friendly and responsive to our customer’s needs,” she says.  “We are here to serve our community and they deserve a timely, effective response.”


Ted O’Campo, Senior Recreation Coordinator
Parks & Recreation Department 

Ted manages the operations of the Parks and Recreation Department’s Community Facilities Division.  He coordinates community events and staffing at the Community Center, Rotary Club House, R.G. Smith Club House and the Senior & Arts Center.  “I believe hard work and commitment should be par for the course and Folsom residents should not expect any thing less from City employees,” says Ted.  “Meeting and exceeding the expectations of our residents is my number one priority.”


Loo Ng, City Safety Officer
City Attorney’s Department

Loo helped establish Folsom’s first citywide safety program last year, and assumed the full time role of City Safety Office four months ago.  He implements safety programs and risk management policies, responds to incidents involving city property, works to reduce or eliminate hazards, and promotes wellness programs as part of an overall employee safety strategy. “With Loo’s very capable assistance and his extensive safety background, our safety program has grown by leaps and bounds,” says the City Attorney.  “Loo has helped raise the awareness of safety for employees in all job classes.  Folsom is fast becoming a model city in our insurance risk pool for our safety efforts.”


Rande Alfsen, Fire Suppression Captain
Fire Department 

A 24-year member of the Folsom Fire Department, Rande always goes above and beyond.  “He gives of himself unselfishly to complete numerous activities that benefit the department and the community, including the recent Firefighters’ Burn Institute Fill the Boot Drive,” says the Fire Chief.  Rande is captain of the Truck Company assigned to the City’s main fire station with responsibility for technical rescues, vehicle extrications and ground fire operations.  Rande says he treats others as he would like to be treated, or as he would expect his family and friends to be treated.  “I like to do that little something extra, maybe just expressing a simple thank you or making sure our crews have done everything possible.”


Candy Glass, Senior Office Assistant
City Clerk’s Department

“Candy has an excellent work ethic and a personal commitment to always doing the best job possible,” says her department director.  “She inspires a lot of trust.  She’s also very friendly and fosters a great team spirit.”  Candy assists the public at the City Clerk’s counter, responding to a wide variety of questions and requests for assistance. Her co-workers are impressed with how much she has learned in her seven months on the job and enjoy her cheerful demeanor and can-do attitude. 

 


Rob Nunley, Information Services Technician
Administrative Services Department

“Rob is awesome and always smiling, even when dealing with our demanding and sensitive department needs,” says the employee who nominated Rob for this recognition. Since joining the City just two and a half years ago, Rob has developed a reputation as one who provides great service and resolves problems in a timely fashion. His job is to ensure the City’s computers, servers and networks are up and running around the clock. Rob says, “Communicating with customers about the status of their problem until is it resolved is very important.”  


Adrienne Nelson
Office Assistant I, Public Works Department 

Adrienne’s job is providing dispatch and support services to the evening transit staff. She responds to customer calls and processes transit statistics. Her supervisor applauds Adrienne’s initiative, noting that she is always willing to pitch in where needed “with a smile and a high-five.” Adrienne says, “Most of our customers are totally dependent on our buses as their main mode of transportation, so we provide a highly valued service. Our Transit Chief has been really great in putting together a team of people who love their jobs and care about what we do.” 


Anne Clayton
Revenue Manager, Finance Department 

As supervisor of the City’s revenue division, Anne has responsibility for Utility Billing, Accounts Receivable, Business Licenses and Customer Service. Her boss says she runs a highly efficient division while modeling excellent customer service and positive leadership. “Good customer service is being fair to each person, being approachable and putting myself in the other person’s place and situation,” says Anne. “My personal goal is to represent the City in such a positive way that the people I interact with have a great feeling about the City and the Finance Department.” 


Ken Menzer
City Arborist, Community Development Department

While protecting trees is an important aspect of Ken’s duties, the most vital part of his job is promoting Folsom’s urban forest with new planting programs. As his department director says, “Ken is the reason we were selected as a Tree City USA town in 2007.” Ken says, “My service to our community is to help residents understand why we need trees, how to care for them, and to share good arboricultural information. Growing up I was always one of those kids who constantly asked ‘why’ again and again. Now I enjoy explaining the ‘whys’ of tree care so our community’s trees are less of a hazard and more of a revered asset." 


Shawn Baird, Records Clerk
Police Department

“Providing quality customer service is important,” says Shawn. “I’m often the first person that people see at the Police Department. I want them to know I’m here to help.” Customer service and data entry are Shawn’s primary areas of responsibility. She also trains new employees. “It’s a challenging position and I’m always running into new situations I haven’t dealt with before.” Shawn’s supervisor says she is an “outstanding records clerk who presents a positive and professional demeanor at all times.”  


George Ackerman, Senior Construction Inspector
Community Development Department

Dedicated, diligent, articulate and knowledgeable are qualities that define George, according to his supervisor. A 15-year City employee, George is the solo inspector assigned to the Palladio Mall site, a significant and complex project. “George exudes all the best qualities one would want and expect in a construction inspector. He works well with other inspectors, contractors and developers and is well respected by all.” George says he just likes to be sure work is done right! 


Aaron Hutchinson, Information Services Technician
Administrative Services Department

“Making a difference in the workplace may start with one but it always tends to conclude with the collaboration of many,” says Aaron. His responsibilities include taking care of the City’s constantly changing technology needs. Aaron says providing high quality customer service puts him in the position of devising solutions and provides an opportunity for creative and collaborative learning. “Aaron gives the customer everything they want and maybe a little more,” says Aaron’s supervisor. “He takes the time to listen to his customers, and sometimes that is all that’s needed to leave the customer with a positive feeling.”


Vickie Stein, Administrative Assistant
Parks & Recreation Department

Vickie is the “resident pro” when it comes to handling the highly specialized software program that coordinates registration and logistics for all Parks & Recreation Department classes and activities. “She’s a really sharp individual with amazing behind-the-scene skills that are essential for our department,” says a department supervisor. Vickie enjoys the diversity of her job, as well as the opportunities to solve problems and multi-task as she works with internal and external customers. “Providing high quality customer service allows one to build relationships, and while it may sound corny, also brings a great deal of satisfaction for a job well done.” 


Linda Corrie, Office Assistant
Utilities Department

A Folsom resident for more than 20 years, Linda works at the City’s Water Treatment Plant. She responds to resident inquiries about water issues and schedules work crews to correct any problems. Linda says customer service is a very important part of her job. “Our residents count on us to provide professional and friendly assistance. I love to be able to make someone’s day just by doing my job.” During her seven years working for the City, she has also worked for the Finance and Public Works departments. “I have enjoyed each of my jobs and work hard to do my part to make Folsom the best possible place to live.” 


Terrie Frey, Business License Revenue Technician
Finance Department

Terrie, who joined the City last year, has already received a lot of praise for her customer skills, organization and efficiency. “Good customer service makes for happy customers,” she says. “I want Folsom to be known as a friendly town, and for business owners to think of the City of Folsom as a government that is easy to work with.” Her supervisor says Terrie has had an extremely positive impact and is a great asset to the Revenue Division. Her co-workers are happy she’s a member of the team.


Rich Reynolds, Senior Building Trade Worker
Administrative Services Department

Fifteen-year City employee Rich Reynolds is a familiar face to employees throughout the City. His job is to maintain all the buildings, from City Hall to the Community Center, Police Department, Aquatic Center and Sports Complex. “I do everything a general contractor would do, from concrete to roofing and everything in between,” he says. “My dad taught me to do the job right the first time, so that’s my goal.” Rich’s co-workers appreciate all he does to make their jobs easier. As one said, “Rich is always helpful and has great follow-up. Despite his busy schedule, he’s pleasant and friendly. His upbeat nature makes my day.”


Tim O’Shea, Park Maintenance Supervisor
Parks & Recreation Department

Tim, who recently celebrated his 10 year anniversary as a City employee, has the important task of providing safe and attractive parks for local residents and visitors. He enjoys the opportunity to offer a pleasurable experience for park patrons of all ages by working as a team with his co-workers to solve problems. “I really hate the government worker stereotype and the negative connotations it brings,” he says. “I try to break that stereotype by providing the best service possible so the public will believe in us and what we do.”


Jennifer Johnson, Community Service Officer
Police Department 

Jennifer was recently named Outstanding Cadet during graduation ceremonies at the Sacramento Police Department’s Community Service Officer Academy, a well deserved honor that did not surprise her supervisor. He says “Jennifer consistently demonstrates the motivation to provide our community with the best in customer service. I think her selection as the Outstanding Cadet is particularly impressive in that she was selected by the Academy staff from a group of students primarily comprised of Sacramento Police Department personnel. We are very proud of her.” Jennifer says, “I assist victims every way possible so they have a good feeling about the Police Department and know we are here to help. I always try to treat people with the utmost respect.
