Historic Sutter Street Revitalization construction began in February and is expected to conclude before the 2010 holiday season.

Step-by-Step:

1 -- Verify specific locations of old underground utilities.  Remove medians and dig various trenches for new sewer and water infrastructure.  (Work begins on the west end of Sutter Street near Reading Street and progresses east to Scott Street.)

2 -- Remove road pavement, including the remnants of old Highway 50 underneath, and install a new roadway featuring on-street parking and short-term delivery areas.  (Pedestrian access to Sutter Street businesses will be maintained at all times.)
3 -- Remove monolithic shed roofs.
4 -- Tear out old sidewalks and create temporary access to merchant doorways.  Install new widened sidewalks to accommodate shoppers and outdoor dining.  Add ramps to improve ADA access.  Add new facades, canopies and balconies that complement Sutter Street’s historic architecture.
5 -- Plant more than 100 shade trees of differing varieties (including Chinese Pistache, Ornamental Pear, Maple and Valley Oak) and plant additional landscaping to beautify the area.
6 – Install bicycle racks, benches and interpretative history plaques and signage.

7 – Celebrate project completion!
